The Barnes Foundation opens on the Parkway on May 19th and, guaranteed, there will be long lines.

If you can’t get in there, be here on May 30th at 7:30 p.m. for the last Wednesday program of the season.

The coverage of the Barnes will give you a lot of information, but will it tell you everything? Will it tell you (for instance)

+ How world-famous Bucks County novelist James Michener deceived Dr. Barnes?

+ What the Hunchback of Notre Dame (Charles Laughton) has in common with Dr. Barnes?

+ Why Albert Einstein turned down an invitation to see the collection?

These will be revealed by Dr. Sheldon Weintraub, who leveraged a lifetime interest in art into becoming a Barnes Foundation docent. He is a walking encyclopedia, filled with detailed information about the largest private collection of post-Impressionist and African art in the world. But he is also a stand-up comic and knows how to deliver a talk (with PowerPoint presentation) that is both educational and entertaining. He will cover the “secrets,” the collection, how to best view and understand it, and the battle surrounding the move of the collection from Merion to the Parkway.

As with all events, it is non-smoking and you have to be a member or a guest of a member to attend.

Please Note: This is an event for Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Chat with award-winning performer and playwright, Dan Hoyle, as he creates a brand new theater piece about about the news — how it is reported, who disseminates it, and how it impacts our lives. First Person Arts, Philadelphia’s premiere storytelling organization, has commissioned Dan to create an original theater work based on interviews with journalists and news consumers. The resulting play will take audiences behind the scenes and explore how and by whom the news is reported, and how evolving practices and technology impact what we come to know.

Join Dan for a special meet and greet at The Pen and Pencil Club. He’ll talk about the project in general and then open it up to an informal discussion with Philly’s journalism community. Who knows? Your story could become a part of Dan’s finished play.

Learn more about this exciting new project at thenews.firstpersonarts.org. The commission of The News is made possible thanks to a planning grant from the Philadelphia Theater Initiative (part of The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage).

KieranTimberlake, the Philadelphia architects working on the Dilworth Plaza renovation with a host of other firms, is well known in circles across the world, but a bit of a secret in its hometown.

The award-winning Philadelphia-based firm founded in 1984 by Stephen Kieran and James Timberlake has worked on buildings for Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. (where President Obama’s daughters go to school); Make It Right (Brad Pitt’s Foundation in New Orleans); Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania; the New London Embassy; and a visionary project called Cellophane House, a five-story building made of transparent, recyclable materials commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art that’s aimed at reinventing the way buildings are assembled, and what they’re made of.

Join us for an Off the Record session with Stephen Kieran and James Timberlake to talk about the evolution of their work, how they envision Philadelphia’s future, and which buildings they love (and hate).
