About this event

A convivial club of pipe smokers honors a gregarious literary lion: Journalist, novelist, essayist and poet Christopher Darlington Morley (1890-1957) spent most of his life and career in New York City, but this town set him on his path to later fame. He was born in Bryn Mawr, graduated from Haverford College (where he first started writing) in 1910, and got his start in professional journalism as an editor at the Ladies' Home Journal and a columnist at the Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger.
As outgoing as he was prolific, Morley also enjoyed pipe smoking: his first collection of essays, published in 1920, is titled Pipefuls. And once each month, a group of equally gregarious people gather together to enjoy a few pipefuls at the Christopher Morley Pipe Club, one of the P&P's longest-running affinity groups. This month's meeting of the Pipe Club takes place on Sunday, May 18, at 7 p.m. There's no need to register: just bring yourself, a pipe, and your favorite tobacco. No pipe? No problem: They welcome non-pipe-smokers (or even non-smokers) as well.
While at the Public Ledger, Morley took long lunch breaks to amble around the city and write about what he saw. These essays have been collected in a book, Christopher Morley's Philadelphia, edited by Ken Kalfus.
