Radio reporters! Audio producers! Podcasters! Sound Artists! Audio Business People! Come hang out and mingle at the holiday party edition of Rowhome Productions’ Philly Podcast Mixer on Thursday, December 18th at the Pen & Pencil Club. This mixer will feature our first ever PHILLY (ELEVATOR) PODCAST PITCH PARTY… wherein up to 10 people will have the chance to give attendees a three-minute max presentation about an audio project they’re working on. It should be a fun, fast-paced way to learn about podcasts, radio stories, audio tours (& more?) happening in our backyard. Join us at the Pen and Pencil Club for a late night celebration of holiday spirit, on St. Johns Day: December the 27th, at 8 pm, at 1522 Latimer st. Enjoy a charcuterie selection, jamon serrano carving station, and an oyster bar. A complimentary spiced white or red wine is included with your ticket, with a select menu of chateau wines available for purchase alongside the ususal cocktail selection. Hosted with games, festive cheer, and the usual crowd of mischief makers. Both floors are open for this event, with food available on the top bar, and drinks being poured on the ground floor. $20. The P&P Book Club’s next book is "How to Stand Up to a Dictator" by Maria Ressa. Ressa, a renowned international journalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, recounts her journey from working at CNN to running a Philippines-based online news organization that became a target of the Philippine government. She maps a web of disinformation that stretches from the Philippines to Silicon Valley. All are welcome to read this book and discuss it with us.

Kristen Martin, a Philly-based author, talks about her book "The Sun Won‘t Come Out Tomorrow: The Dark History of American Orphanhood." Martin combines in-depth archival research, memoir, and cultural analysis to explore the history of how the United States has treated dependent children from the 1800s to the present. Philadelphia features at several points, including a chapter that focuses on the recent SCOTUS case Fulton v. Philadelphia. Martin is also a freelance writer and cultural critic with work published in The New York Times Magazine, The New York Review of Books, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The New Republic, The Nation, and elsewhere. Martin will be interviewed by Jiordan Castle and answer questions from the audience.
